The song was written by Charles Trenet in 1943 as he was in a train trip, in 20 minutes. But he didn’t really believe in the potential of the song until he finally recorded it in 1946. This may be one of the most successful and famous French songs abroad, especially since it was adaptated in English (Beyond The Sea) and covered by many artists (the most famous version being the one by Bobby Darin). The song was also featured in many movies, such as in the opening credits of Finding Nemo by Disney. It is, to me, one the most beautiful Charles Trenet songs.

- La mer qu’on voit danser
- Le long des golfes clairs
- A des reflets d’argent, la mer
- Des reflets changeants
- Sous la pluie
- La mer au ciel d’été
- Confond ses blancs moutons
- Avec les anges si purs, la mer
- Bergère d’azur
- Infinie
- Voyez près des étangs
- Ces grands roseaux mouillés
- Voyez ces oiseaux blancs
- Et ces maisons rouillées
- La mer les a bercés
- Le long des golfes clairs
- Et d’une chanson d’amour, la mer
- A bercé mon coeur
- Pour la vie
- La mer qu’on voit danser
- Le long des golfes clairs
- A des reflets d’argent, la mer

- The sea that you see dancing
- Along the clear gulfs
- Has silver reflections, the sea
- Changing reflections
- Under the rain
- The sea, to the summer sky
- Mixes its white crest
- With the so pure angels, the sea
- Azure shepherdess
- Endless
- See near the ponds
- These great wet reeds
- See these white birds
- And these rusted houses
- The sea lulled them
- Along the clear gulfs
- And with a love song, the sea
- Lulled my heart
- For life
- The sea that you see dancing
- Along the clear gulfs
- Has silver reflections, the sea
- Changing reflections
