Chagrin d’Amour is a 1980’s duo (Gregory Ken and Valli) who made only one famous song, this one, but what a song ! One of these songs that automatically makes you happy. Its spoken lyrics remind of early hip hop : it’s considered the first French rap song. And what a killer bassline. I also add the clip because it’s so good. Enjoy !
- Now here’s a story that must be told
- ‘Bout a man who rocks since he’s four years old
- He danced up and down from night til’ dawn
- He said : check that beat goes on and on
- He jives on reggae, he jives on punk
- He said : give me music and not just funk
- He jumps to the left, he jumps to the right
- He jumps up and down all through the night
- Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
- -Ah qu’est-ce t’as là, qu’est-ce t’as là ?
- I don’t need money
- I don’t need a car…
- 5 a.m., I got chills
- I chattle my teeth and I turn up the sound
- Alone on my bed in my wrinkled blue sheets
- It’s the insomnia, broken sleep
- I’m losing my head and my cigarettes
- Are all smoked in the ashtray
- It’s full of Kleenex and empty bottles
- I’m all alone, all alone, all alone
- While Boulogne 1 is in despair
- I have enough to fill a last glass
- Clac, makes the glass falling on the lino
- I cut my hand while picking up the pieces
- I sterilise, the walls who are dancing
- Alcohol, it indebriates and it begins
- Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
- Make the sheep on the flooring
- And what did you do at that moment ?
- –I think I turned the radio on
- -Everyone does, does, does
- What they like, like, like
- -The precipice is at the end
- -The precipice, we don’t give a shit
- Everyone does, does, does
- What they like, like, like
- All the stars that shine
- -What do they have to tell me, the stars ?
- 6 a.m., I need to find something to drink
- Strong liqueur or black cofee
- I run a red light, police patrolling
- I tighten my buttocks, no hurry
- “Four, five francs 2, darling”
- Says the little thing in the pink morning
- I park my Ondine 3 under his rhymes
- -Ah what’s the matter, you, what’s the matter ?
- Right near a post there’s a small bar
- I push the door and come to sit
- Three or four sinister dudes
- Hit the cardboard in the waters
- All alone at the bar in a dark corner
- A platinum blonde sip her wisp
- She tells me : “Champagne ?”, I accompany her
- She tells me : “Fifty ?”, I tell her “I’m tempted”
- –And how did you return ? -In my car
- Ah, there was still the same air 4 on the radio
- -Everyone does, does, does
- Chat they like, like, like
- -How much pressure in bars
- -No one forces you to drink
- Everyone does, does, does
- What they like, like, like
- -People have such manias
- -Decalcomania
- 7 a.m., um, the hotel
- I pay, I shorten
- I search my pockets
- I know it’s ugly
- Her red smile, her moving boding
- She makes her cross heart slip
- On her tanned skin
- You have the nylon stockings that split on the quilt
- Her nails hang on, “Do you come, darling ?”
- The bed that cracks and the shutters slam
- Alone in the bed in her wrinckled blue sheet
- My frozen fingers slip on her skin
- She strikes a pose, I have something else in mind
- Her mirror eyes return my look
- The hurried angels in this iced blue
- Tell me “It’s time”, I say “Which time ?”
- And you, you really don’t remember what happened ?
- -No, really not.
- -Everyone does, does, does
- What they like, like, like
- -Under my feet, there’s the earth
- -Under your feet, there’s hell
- Everyone does, does, does
- What they like, like, like
- -My God, I can’t even come
- -Too bad for you, you have to sleep
- So I run away in the grey morning
- It’s full of crates and no taxi
- Cats who fight, their little purrs
- Some Eminence, some Petit Bateau
- At Porte de la Chapelle, I feel ugly
- My curlers aren’t in folds anymore
- In my studio I vacuum 5
- Video scares me a little
- -Mrs Pee has got trouble
- Mr Daddy is worried
- In the dwelling, the people badly off
- Baby vomits his porridge
- 8 a.m., I got chills
- I chattle my teeth and I turn up the sound
- Alone on my bed in my wrinkled blue sheets
- It’s the insomnia, broken sleep
- I’m losing my head and my cigarettes
- Are all smoked in the ashtray
- It’s full of Kleenex and empty bottles
- I’m all alone, all alone, all alone
- While Boulogne is in despair
- I have enough to fill a last glass
- Clac, makes the glass falling on the lino
- I cut my hand while picking up the pieces
- I sterilise, the walls who are dancing
- Alcohol, it indebriates and it begins
- Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
- Make the sheep on the flooring
Notes :
- Boulogne-Billancourt is a place near Paris. It was one of the main centers of working class syndicalism, especially during the May 68 movement. Jean-Paul Sartre, a very famous French philosopher, is said to have said : “We should’nt put Billancourt in despair” as a reference to this syndicalism and working class component.
- The franc(s) was the former money in France before the Euro which is used today.
- The Ondine was a version of the Renault Dauphine. Renault is a very important French car company.
- Personnaly I always hear “y avait toujours ma mère à la radio” (= there was still my mom on the radio), and I find that way more funny, so it was a real deceit to discover the real lyrics 😀
- It is the name “vaccum”, and not the verb “vacuum”, that’s used in the lyrics. Which lakes “j’aspirateur” (completely incorrect) instead of “j’aspire”.
